How do I reference material from an Open Educational Resource (OER) created for my module? (APA)

Answer

Open Educational Resources (OERs) are generally found hosted on the BibliU platform, and will appear in the essential reading section of your module reading list. OERs generally come in two types.

Whole works (written/edited by one author/editor for all sections)

For whole works, these can usually be treated as a standard book, as the author, publisher etc. will be clearly stated at the start of the book.

Compiled works (each section/chapter is written by a different author)

Where an OER has been assembled from lots of different sources, treat the individual sections of the OER as chapters in an edited book.

Author, N. (Year). Chapter title. In N. Editor (Ed.), Book title (pp. x-x). Publisher. https://doi.org/xxxxx

For the purposes of producing your reference:

  • The chapter author is usually found in the 'chapter overview' page, before the section/chapter begins.
  • The publication date is the date the OER was put together (i.e. 2025 for this year's OERs).
  • The chapter title should match the title at the beginning of the section/chapter (e.g. Qualitative research).
  • The book editors are the staff members who compiled the book for your use (this may be your module tutor, but you may need to ask).
  • The book title is the name of the OER as it appears on the reading list (e.g. OER 405PSY_Introducing research in psychology 25/26).
  • The publisher is Sylla (which is the system used to create the complied OER).
  • BibliU OER titles do not have a DOI, so this element can be omitted.

Example references for compiled OERs
