What is OpenAthens?

Answer

OpenAthens makes remote access simple. Providers of e-resources need to verify you are enrolled at an institution permitted to use them. OpenAthens is the system used by Coventry University for authentication.

If you try to access an e-resource directly on a provider site and the library does not have a subscription with that provider, your university log in details will not be recognised and you will see an error message e.g. 'Sorry, access to this resource has been restricted'.

Some library subscriptions may be via third party providers, rather than directly with the publisher, so it is always recommended that you log in to Locate and search there to confirm whether you have access to an e-resource. If not, you can use the Document Supply Service.
