Q & A
Please note this guidance is for students using the APA referencing style. If you are law student, use the OSCOLA referencing style in your Chartered Management Institute (CMI) assignment. Please contact the Law Librarian, if you have questions re: OSCOLA
Resources from the CMI THRIVE Portal
Where possible, reference the resource according to the source type, whether a journal article, chapter from an edited book, image etc. See the A-Z listing for details how to reference the different source types. Use a link to the THRIVE portal at the end of your reference to show where you found the source. This will be a link to the home page as the website requires a login.
Most sources from THRIVE will not have a clear author, and in this case, name the Chartered Management Institute as the author.
-
In the in-text citations, the first time you mention CMI write out the Institute’s name in full followed by the abbreviation in brackets. Use square brackets around the abbreviation in the parenthetical citation (see below).
-
In subsequent in-text citations, just use the abbreviation CMI.
-
Always write the Institute's name in full in your reference list even if you have multiple references from the CMI.
First in-text citation from the CMI
Narrative citation: The Chartered Management Institute (CMI, 2018) suggests . . .
Parenthetical citation: Working cultures can be transformed by good leadership (Chartered Management Institute [CMI], 2018, p. 3).
The date can distinguish sources by the same author and no change is required in your in-text citations or the reference list when your sources have different dates.
If your sources have the same date, use a small letter after the date in both the in-text citation and reference list. If there is no specific date, use n.d. (for no date), and a hyphen before adding the small letter, for example: (n.d.-a.).
First in-text citation from the CMI with same date
Narrative citation: According to Chartered Management Institute (CMI, 2022a) . . . or According to Chartered Management Institute (CMI, n.d.-a)
Parenthetical citation: (CMI, 2022b, p. 2) or (CMI, n.d.-b, p. 2)
Reference list:
Chartered Management Institute. (2022a). A really interesting book. Routledge.
Chartered Management Institute. (2022b). Another fascinating book. Pearson.
You are also encouraged to use a wide variety of sources not just sources from the CMI when writing your assignments. Remember to refer to your reading lists from Aula or Locate and the management resources on your Subject Guide.
Images / Tables
All images and tables will require a reference when used as evidence in an assignment. Again, follow the guidance in the A-Z listing for images or tables. If you are creating a table of a PESTEL or SWOT analysis, reference the content you have placed in the table rather than the model itself. In the tables section of the A-Z listing, different options are presented as to how to reference your data sources.
Case Study Video / Transcript (Students studying modules: 7049CRB, 7050CRB, 7051CRB, 7052CRB & 7058ENV)
When referencing the case study video or transcript, use the interviewee as the author (this is different guidance to what is given in the APA guide and should only be used for the CMI module).
Interviewee, N. (Date). Title [Video]. Publisher. www.website.com
Interviewee, N. (Date). Title [Transcript]. Publisher. www.website.com
Examples:
Narrative citation: Unwin (2020) discusses that safety is paramount for their workforce at Highways England. (8:32)
Parenthetical citation: "Safety is our number one imperative for our own workforce" (Unwin, 2020, 8:32).
Reference list:
Unwin, P. (2020). Highways England [Video]. Aula.

Incorporate the names of other contributors to the video in the narrative text, if necessary.
Use a time stamp from the beginning of the quote in place of a page number:
Barnes asked, “What leadership strategies do you have in place?” (Unwin, 2020, 10:45).
