Visual assignment formats, such as posters or presentations, may require a different method of referencing to the Images guidelines.  

For example, some images may be used simply to increase visual interest or attractiveness. Additionally, in some assignment formats, it may not be practical to follow the usual in-text citation guidance. In these cases, it might be acceptable to miss out the figure number and title, and/or move the in-text citation. 

Always confirm any deviations from the usual style with your module leader. 

This document gives some examples for alternative ways of referencing images and using stock images.

Stock images and attribution

Attribution refers to recognising the image creator. Some images come from free websites (e.g. Pixabay, Unsplash) and do not require attribution. 

Stock images with no attribution do not need a reference if the image is to make your assignment more attractive. This includes images from PowerPoint.  

If a source does not mention an attribution or you are unsure, it is safer to include a reference than not.  

All images that add context to your assignment, even if the image is from a free website not requiring attribution, will need a reference because the image adds meaning to your work. 

Further information on attribution can be found on the APA website. This website discusses copyright, but you do not need to worry about copyright if using images in an assignment for educational purposes. 

Reference list 

You must include an entry in the reference list for every image with an in-text citation in your assignment.
