How do I reference sources for the CMI assignment? (APA)

Please note this guidance is for students using the APA referencing style. If you are law student, use the OSCOLA referencing style in your CMI assignment. Please contact the Law Librarian, if you have questions re: OSCOLA

Case Study Video / Transcript

When referencing the case study video or transcript, use the interviewee as the author (this is different guidance to what is given in the APA guide and should only be used for the CMImodule).

Interviewee, N. (Date). Title [Video]. Publisher. www.website.com

Interviewee, N. (Date). Title [Transcript]. Publisher. www.website.com

Examples:

Narrative citation: Unwin (2020) discusses that safety is paramount for their workforce at Highways England. (8:32)

Parenthetical citation: "Safety is our number one imperative for our own workforce" (Unwin, 2020, 8:32).

Reference list:

Unwin, P. (2020). Highways England [Video]. Aula.

Incorporate the names of other contributors to the video in the narrative text, if necessary.

Use a time stamp from the beginning of the quote in place of a page number.

Barnes asked, “What leadership strategies do you have in place?” (Unwin, 2020, 10:45).

Resources from the CMI Website

Reference the resource according to the source type, whether a journal article, chapter from an edited book, image etc. See the A-Z listing for details how to reference the different source types. Use a link to the CMI website at the end of your citation to show where you found the source.

If there is no named author, use the Chartered Management Institute as the author. Always write the name in full in your reference list even if you have multiple references from the CMI. In the in-text citations, the first time you mention CMI write out the Institute’s name in full followed by the abbreviation in brackets.

Examples:

Narrative citation: The Chartered Management Institute (CMI, 2018) suggests . . .

Parenthetical citation: Working cultures can be transformed by good leadership (Chartered Management Institute [CMI], 2018, p. 35).

Use square brackets around the abbreviation in the parenthetical citation.

In subsequent mentions of the Institute in the body of your assignment, just use the abbreviation CMI.

The date can distinguish sources by the same author and no change is required in your in-text citations or the reference list when your sources have different dates. If your sources have the same date, use a small letter after the date in both the in-text citation and reference list. If there is no specific date, use n.d. and a hyphen before adding the small letter, for example n.d.-a.

Examples:

Narrative citation: (Chartered Management Institute [CMI], 2022a, p. 45)

Parenthetical citation: According to CMI (2022b) . . .

Reference list:

Chartered Management Institute. (2022a). A really interesting book. Routledge.

Chartered Management Institute. (2022b). Another fascinating book. Pearson.

Images / Tables

Remember all images and tables will require a reference. Again, follow the guidance in the A-Z listing for images or tables. If you are creating a table of a PESTLE or SWOT analysis, reference the content you have placed in the table rather than the model itself. In the tables section of the A-Z listing, different options are presented as to how to reference your data sources.
